Thrifty Thursday : Clean Cook’n

For some time now I have known that BPA is bad for you. BPA stands for Bisphenol A, which is a compound that is found in a lot of plastics. It’s been found in the coating of water bottles and canned foods. The FDA has banned the use of it in baby products. BPA is a synthetic estrogen that has the potential to lead to hormonal imbalances, or even breast cancer. Other health problems can be: fatigue, weight issues, anxiety, poor sleep and more. In our house we have tried to cut back on the use of plastics (I’m still working on cutting out Starbucks cups, don’t judge). One day I was cooking and could literally SMELL the plastic melting on the spatula. It was the nastiest smell and I thought, “Well this can’t be good because we are possibly eating this in our food.” I don’t know why it never dawned on me before.
Thrifty Thursday at the YMCA Blacksburg Virignia, Plastic is bad for you, BPA, Cooking Clean Nicki Metcalf PhotographyFor today’s Thrifty Thursday we are cooking clean! While thrifting, I’ve tried to keep an eye out for kitchen items that are made of wood or iron. I went home for my birthday recently and went to he YMCA Thrift Store in Blacksburg, Virginia where I found some awesome cooking supplies. Whether there was really plastic melting in my food or it was just my imagination, I have peace of mind now knowing that I’m heading in the right direction of anti-plastic.

IRON PAN 20.00

This was not the best deal, or maybe it was. It seemed a bit steep for me but it was in decent condition. A little vinegar will always do the trick! I asked multiple strangers (you know, wise old ladies) if they thought it was a good deal and they said “Yes” so I went with it. I know that a lot of other pans have a coating in them that LORD KNOWS what that does to your body, so we are going with old faithful. Come to find out I get home and show my mom and she said, “Honey, I have a ton of those in the cabinet you could have had.” FAIL. Oh well, can ‘t take it back.

WOODEN SALAD THINGEES 2.50

I don’t have a clue what they are called but I know they are great for salads. I’m telling you guys, it’s all about the wood.

  • Wood doesn’t leave a residue in your food that can cause health problems.
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Does not conduct heat
  • Biodegradable
  • Germ killing Properties

WOODEN SPATULA 1.50

When I found this bad boy, I was literally jumping for joy. My eyes were gleaming like a kid on Christmas morning. No more stinky, melted, plastic smell when cooking!!! Seriously you can’t go wrong with wood. I swear wood is great for everything!

Whether there was really plastic melting in my food or it was just my imagination, I have peace of mind knowing I’m heading in the right direction of anti plastic.
